Remember back in Babywearing 101 when I mentioned I had never used a pod carrier before? Well, I entered a design contest with one of my favorite conversion artists to win a free pod conversion and I'm one of the finalists!
All I need you to do is go to their Facebook page and "like" ^that^ picture!! THAT'S IT! If you ever want me to return the favor I would be more than happy to :-)
While you're there be sure to check out some of the amazing carriers! If you ever decide to order be sure to let them know Amanda Hinson sent you!
Thanks again!
PS - I'm trying to put together a pregnancy update (weeks 18,19,20) but I seriously hurt my back and can only sit up straight for so long. It'll be coming soon though, promise!

Things I'm loving right this second...
Literally, right this second since I didn't even have to get off my ass to take these pictures...
My husband! A certain baby who is generally even tempered and quiet has decided to be a total turd today and if I'm holding him he just wants my nipple in his mouth. He doesn't want to nurse, he just wants to use me as a human binky. Being a human binky makes it quite hard to get anything else done. Luckily, The Sailor has this magic power where he can lay down with The Seamonkey and the baby falls asleep (The Sailor usually falls asleep soon after, actually). And even though I'm pretty sure Little Man is teething (yes, I realize he isn't even 12 weeks old yet, but he is legit trying to eat his hand and drooling like a mo'fo) The Sailor's power is still working.
My new sandals. They're from Payless. I normally don't buy shoes from Payless because they're super cheap (not economical, poorly made) but my sister had these ones and I kinda fell in love. They're like flip flops only better because they have a back strap. And when I went to check them out today, they were actually comfortable. And they're only $15. If you decide to go get some, just a heads up, they're on the wall not in the boxes.
Totally killed two birds with one stone with this picture...sleeping baby AND awesome new sandals. BAM! And, since it's a crappy cell phone picture you can't even tell I desperately need to shave my legs...
Water with cucumber and watermelon slices in it. Put fresh cucumbers and watermelon in water magically makes it more refreshing. The added flavor isn't overwhelming at all, it's just freaking amazing. And it makes you look super fancy. Although drinking it out of a Camelbak water bottle does not make you look super fancy - don't judge me, I love this water bottle! You should totally try it...
So this post wasn't completely pointless, just wanted to let you all know I didn't fall off the planet again. Actually, The Sailor, The Seamonkey, and I were in Massachusetts visiting my family for a week! So I'm in the process of putting together a post about flying across the country with an infant! I'm also still working on a post on babywearing (which actually goes with the traveling post since I don't think I would have survived the flight without my ring sling), breastfeeding, cloth diapers... Plus I have a few cool DIY projects I should be doing in the next few weeks so you can expect some posts about those. Bottom line - you should be pretty stoked about my blog for the next few weeks. But now I have to go shower, shave my legs, and start the process of actually styling my hair because The Sailor's squadron is having a party tomorrow and I want to look cute. And yes, it takes two days for me to do my hair, especially with a baby in the mix.
Until next time...

I'm Fat.
I tried to come up with a clever title for this post, but I've been doing laundry for just under 12 hours and so my brain is kinda mush.
But yeah, that title says it all...I'm fat. Okay, so I'm not really fat, I'm just fat for my standards. I was well aware of the fact then when you get pregnant you gain weight but I didn't realize how much it would really mess with my head. If you followed me during my pregnancy at all, you know my biggest gripe with pregnancy was just having to sit there and watch myself get fat. And now I'm on my way to getting my body back but in all honesty, it isn't happening as quickly as I would like.
Two days before The Seamonkey was born I weighed in at 198 pounds. At my initial appointment (at 5 weeks) I weighed 158 pounds. The weekend of The Fourth of July I weighed 142 pounds but I completely stopped working out and eating right right after that. I will be happy when I'm back down to the low 140s.
So, for the first month after The Seamonkey was born I just didn't worry about it. I was still getting used to having a baby and I was losing weight anyway since I was breastfeeding (and Little Man is quite the hungry, hungry hippo). But, on May 1st the work started...
First of all, I joined Weight Watchers. I had a lot of success with Weight Watchers when I was preparing for my wedding to The Ex. I loved it. I liked the plan, I really liked the ladies at the meeting I went to, and I loved my meeting leader. I just assumed I would have a similar experience.
...But I didn't. The nearest center is like 45 minutes away, but that didn't stop me since I had such a good experience in Pittsburgh. The first meeting I went to I just didn't feel it. They seemed obsessed with sticking to the topic that Weight Watchers says to talk about that week. The Leader really didn't include any of the members in the meeting; it was a lecture, not a discussion. So I tried a different leader...same thing. I think it is just the policy of that specific location to stick closely to the topic at hand and I didn't like it.
The fact of the matter is I know what I should eat to lose weight. I don't really need the plan itself. I just like the camaraderie that goes along with going to meetings and I just wasn't feeling it. So after a month (where I lost 10.4 pounds) I stopped going.
On top of dieting I also started working out...Last spring I had purchased and completed TurboFire (a Beach Body workout {like P90X or Insanity}) and loved it, so I started that on May 1st. That I still love! And although I only workout 4 times a week (their schedule calls for 6 days a week) I haven't missed 1 day of my schedule yet!
I almost look normal again from behind already! lol
So, since I decided to stop Weight Watchers I started a different program...Body By Vi.
BBV is a meal replacement program. Their most popular plan is replacing two meals a day with their shakes but since I'm exclusively breastfeeding, I'm not comfortable cutting my calories by that much so I'm just having a shake for lunch (I did get the okay from Wesley's pediatrician before even considering the program). Trying to explain the shakes would be stupid since they have a bunch of awesome videos on their site, lol, so you can just go there to get the deets. And, if you get three other people to start the program you get your shakes for free every month so you can go directly to my site for any info: http://agmhinson.bodybyvi.com/
I know a bunch of women on base who are getting awesome results on the program, but if you have any questions about it for me, just ask! If you're intrigued by what you see on the site I encourage you to at least try it since they have a 30 day money back guarantee...if you don't see the results you want just send whatever product you have left and they'll give you your money back! I actually had my first shake today...BBV, ice, light chocolate soy milk, and peanut butter....and it was seriously delicious!
So yeah, I'm fat, but I'm working on it! Did you obsess over your weight post-baby? How did you lose your baby weight?
Until next time...

Oops I did it again....
...I played with your heart, got lost in the game, oh baby baby...
I don't know what's wrong with me (blogging-wise, that is)!!! When I was planning my wedding to the Ex I was SO GOOD at blogging on a near daily basis, and now I can't even get myself to post on a weekly basis. I have so much to say and share, but I feel like I don't even know where to start. I am really going to try and blog regularly but instead of trying to catch up completely on the past two months (because, yeah, my Little Seamonkey turned 2 freakin' months last Friday) I'll just give you a quick run-down...
The Seamonkey is pretty awesome. He sleeps in his bassinet right next to me every night. I'm not ready for him to go to his crib yet, but every night the bassinet seems to get smaller and smaller so the move down the hall seems to be getting closer and closer, whether I like it or not. He usually falls asleep downstairs with us around 830, then gets fed right before we go to bed around 10. Then he gets up to eat around 3, and gets up again around 6 which is when I just pull him into bed to snuggle with me until we get up around 730.
Breastfeeding has been super easy for us. Actually, the biggest problem is I'm still overproducing and he doesn't really appreciate it. In fact, when I let down he starts chomping down on the tip of my nipple to slow down the flow. I just started block feeding to try and help that and I haven't noticed a change yet; I'll try to get myself to do a post specifically about my boobs (because I know you all love reading about my boobs).
As for milestones - his neck control is getting pretty awesome and he loves to stand (with me holding his hands). He hates tummy time but loves being worn in our favorite baby accessory - the Babyhawk Mei Tai. He smiles when he's happy and his lower lip quivers when he isn't and his favorite place in the house is laying on his changing table staring up at the lanterns. And when he sees his reflection he starts babbling to himself.
The Sailor is an amazing father. He supports my needs/wants in parenting 100% (like breastfeeding, having the baby sleep in our room, babywearing, etc.) and always wants to help. I feel bad because by the time he gets home from work the baby has started his evening-crankiness where all he wants to do is nurse in preparation for going to bed, but the easiest way to get the baby to fall asleep is to have The Sailor hold him against his chest; he passes out every time.
And I'm doing really well. As afraid of postpartum depression as I was, I couldn't be further from depressed. I can honestly say I love being a Mom and I just feel like a lot of it has come naturally to me. But, I've been super lucky since The Seamonkey is a pretty easy baby! It would be a completely different story if he never slept, couldn't latch on, and screamed all day and night. My biggest problem is that I fucking hate my body. I definitely plan on posting more about that! I've also been sewing a lot and plan on starting my baby book/scrapbook soon so I obviously will post about that.
I'm not sure if I told you guys or not but it turns out The Sailor is getting deployed again in August. Yeah, I know...it fucking sucks. And he'll be due to get back right around The Seamonkey's first birthday. The thought of it makes me sick. Actually, I'm tearing up right now thinking about it (and I don't even blame it on my still wonky hormones...the idea of him leaving just makes me want to curl up in a ball and cry). I have no idea how I'm going to take care of a baby, two dogs, and a cat on my own. When I think about it I get so bitter. Being a military wife is basically being a single Mom. But, this should be his last deployment for a very long time, and I just need to focus on that.
So yeah, that's the cliff notes version of what's going on in my life right now. I'm really going to try and stay on top of blogging! As hard as it probably is to believe, I love blogging. It's incredibly therapeutic for me! I just have to force myself to sit down and do it. So, if a few days pass and I still haven't posted someone please send me a virtual kick in the butt (in the form of a friendly reminder comment)!
Until next time...
PS - look how much my little man grew!!!!! Make it stooooooooop....I want him to stay little forever...

I failed at "pregnancy blogging"
Hey guys...remember me? The blogger who disappeared for the past few months...
I'm sorry!!!!!!!
I really wasn't cut out to be a pregnancy blogger, since, well, I hated being pregnant, lol. And once The Sailor got home from deployment I just really couldn't have cared less about blogging about the pregnancy that I just wanted to be over, so I didn't!
BUT NOW I HAVE A BABY!!!! And he's absolutely perfect (obviously...The Sailor and I made him...lol)!!! And I've started putting together my birth story (which I'll post the first segment of soon after this post) and hopefully I'll be a better Mommy-blogger than I was pregnancy-blogger. I still wanted to apologize before I just jumped into my birth story though...
And if you don't forgive me then you can just eff off! hahaha

Worst.Blogger.Ever.
Seriously. It has been 2 weeks since I last posted. A lot has happened in those two weeks. Sorry I suck; I'm pregnant and at this point I'm just counting down the minutes until The Sailor gets home from deployment...
Here's everything you've missed...
I printed/framed/hung up the pet silhouettes for the nursery! I absolutely love them. I think I'm going to put a quote (in vinyl) above or beneath them...
You can also see that I did some stenciling on the lamp shade! Another project that I absolutely adore.
My Mom got us our carseat, stroller, and the conversion kit so that the carseat can go in the stroller. We decided to go with the Graco Snugride 25 and the Baby Jogger City Mini. At this point I couldn't be happier with these products, but I'll have to actually review them once The Seamonkey gets here!
I climbed my pregnant ass up on a chair and hung the lanterns above the changing table. Yet another project that turned out even better than I thought it would. And I used my leftover pinwheels from my DIY mobile by attaching them to the underside of the lanterns!
You can also see the hanging basket on the wall that will be used to hold diapering accessories!
I sewed some diaper covers!!! My sewing machine finally got here from Pittsburgh and I dove into my first project. They are far from perfect (the seams are a little wonky) but I love them! I used all Babyville Boutique products - PUL, elastic, velcro, and even the pattern - which can be found at Joann Fabrics. The dinosaur one (on the left) is newborn size and the monster one (on the right) is size small.
Lola got spayed! And while she was all drugged up post-op she totally looked like Doby the House Elf from Harry Potter, hahahaha.
And finally, I prepped (aka washed a million times) all my cloth diapers and supplies and organized and put them away in the dresser. I even stuffed all the pockets and origami folded the flats! And I 100% accept the fact that this stuff will never be this organized again...
And I know I still owe you all initial reviews on the diapers I bought. I promise I'll get around to that. I think I might vlog them, but I'm not sure yet...thoughts?
So, that's what I failed to post about the past two weeks. Again, I apologize. If there is anything I mentioned here that you are dying to read more about (aka have me write a post dedicated to it) just let me know and I'd be more than happy to!

Some Really uncomfortable Parts of Pregnancy
I think High School sex ed should really just be a class about what pregnancy is really like, cuz for reals, if I had known all this I would have be 100% abstinent back in the day!
For one, the other day, I sneezed and peed myself a little bit. Not like wet-my-pants status, but I still went and changed my underwear. And the worst part was, I had just gone pee. But, the Seamonkey likes to use my bladder as a beanbag chair lately so a) I pee all the time and b) I feel like I never can fully empty my bladder. I've actually considered investing in some Poise...
**I totally don't understand the point of that commercial, but at the same time find it thoroughly amusing...**
On the flip side of bathroom talk, I guess we should bring up bowel movements (and no, don't worry, I haven't shit my pants or anything). Irregular just doesn't do what I'm experiencing justice. It is either I-hafta-go-right-now or I don't go at all. Thanks body, that's totally awesome! And since I'm anti-medication during pregnancy, there's nothing I can take to help me! But, it's finally gotten to the point where I have to do something or I'm gonna be totally miserable so I bought some prune juice.
Okay, so technically it's plum juice...same thing. Plus, I had a coupon for that kind (haha, yes, I'm still couponing - go me!). But, it tastes pretty damn good and they claim it's been clinically proven to help regulate your digestive system if you drink 8 oz a day for two week. I'll let you know how it goes in a week and 5 days.
And that wraps up the toilet talk portion of today's blog post - now onto my back.
It hurts. A lot. There is a very fine line between doing too much activity (which makes it hurt more than usual) and not doing enough physical activity (which, you guessed it, also makes it hurt more). If I sit for too long I lose feeling in my right foot. If I move around too much it hurts so much I can barely walk anymore. This past Saturday I was super busy and basically running around all day and when it came time to go to bed I couldn't walk up the stairs. I had to crawl up the fucking stairs to get to bed.
So earlier this week I had my initial consultation with the Physical Therapist. She seems cool. She poked and prodded me a bunch. She tried to re-align my my hips since they were all out of whack. She reminded me the less weight I gain, the less pressure there will be on my back (I know...but I'm soooo hungry all.the.time). And she wants me to come in at least twice a week, but up to four freaking times a week to do therapy while my belly is still manageable so I'll be able to do the most exercises. And she submitted a prescription for me to get a prenatal cradle to give my back some extra support. Oh, you don't know what a prenatal cradle is? Check out this sexy piece:
Then yesterday I went in for my first actual physical therapy session. It wasn't fun. My body didn't enjoy working my ab muscles at all. The Seamonkey didn't appreciate it either (he kept poking me as if to say, "stop doing that woman!"). I basically did a bazillion different variations of a pelvic tilt:
Which as much as that sucked, I had suspected (and the Mayo Clinic confirmed) it would actually be a good exercise to strengthen my body for labor so it's like a double-duty exercise. If I have to be uncomfortable at least it's helping my back and prepping my body to push the Seamonkey out!
So, the next time someone is describing pregnancy as this beautiful experience where everyone will dote on you and you'll have this beautiful pregnancy glow, tell them they're an effing liar. You piss yourself when you sneeze, you get super constipated, and your back hurts to the point where you can't walk up your damn stairs to go to bed. And, you don't glow, you get fucking acne. And yet I already love the little guy that is causing all this bullshit even though I've never met him...who'da thunk it?
Until next time...
PS - check out my beast of a belly. As usual, you can see the whole progression of photos here!

It's Official - I'm Manic
![]() |
| Source - Manic & Mania |
I've mentioned before that I've had a whole slew of mental illness diagnoses and never really got a final answer as to what is causing me to feel/act the way I do. One of those diagnoses was bipolar disorder (AKA manic-depressive disorder). This was a popular diagnosis because of the obvious periods of mania that I've experienced throughout my adolescence and adult life. Lucky for me, I don't get to a point where I think I can fly and jump off of buildings (which can happen to bipolar people), instead I get this burning desire to learn, work, make money, etc.
There were many times where I held 3 jobs. Not because I "needed" the money, just because I wanted extra money and was fully convinced I could handle have multiple jobs. Then 2 weeks, or 4 weeks, or 6 weeks later I would quit my extra jobs (it was common for me to start working at retail stores that I would appreciate a discount at).
While I was planning my wedding to The Ex I decided I should start wedding planning part time on top of my highly stressful full-time job (and on top of planning my own wedding). So I started taking a class at a local community college and started selling customized wedding stuff on Etsy. My Etsy shop was actually pretty successful (I closed it when the mania subsided) and the class was a complete joke.
Well, over the past few weeks I have taken on the following:
- I decided to be a Discovery Toys Educational Consultant (AKA toy sales rep, lol)
- I decided to take an online Jewelry Design & Repair Class
- I decided to improve my photography skills
- I decided to start couponing
- I decided to start selling some of my hand-knit creations
Seriously - that's kinda nuts.
So, I became a Discovery Toys Educational Consultant. This is a Direct Sales position (like Mary Kay or Pampered Chef) where your primary source of income is holding "parties" to sell toys. The cost of the kit (plus shipping and fees, etc.) was $150. Whether I become the best DT sales consultant ever or its just a passing fad the $150 was totally worth it because the toys are freaking awesome (and no, I'm not just saying that because I want you to buy toys from me, lol)! Plus, they spend a lot of time educating their sales reps on childhood development (and in turn which toys will aid in the different stages of development) which is really important to me as a soon-to-be first time mom! If you're interested in buying any of the toys or becoming an Educational Consultant yourself, you can check it out here!

And I signed up to take an online Jewelry Design and Repair class. This has a little more back-story. I recently found out there's a program for military spouses called "Career Advancement Assistance." Basically they'll pay up to $4,000 ($2,000 a year for two years) to go towards a military spouse getting a certification, license, or associate's degree. Your "goals" have to be pre-approved and the point is to help you get started in a career that is mobile since we have to move so often.
Now, I would have waited to start something until after I had the baby and settled into be a Mom, but there's a catch. Once your husband reaches a certain paygrade, you are no longer eligible for the assistance. Well, if my husband gets promoted, I'm no longer eligible. He'll be taking the advancement exam again this spring (it'll be his third time taking it) and if he gets promoted (it's more complicated than just passing the test) he'll officially be the higher pay grade this December. So I potentially have until December to try and take advantage of this! So I'm technically starting the class on the 18th and then I have a year to complete it but I can do it at my own pace.
I'm actually super excited about the class. I've always been into jewelry making; I had my fourth grade Birthday party at the Beadworks in Boston (best Birthday party ever, btw). And the course includes a bunch of supplies you'll need to design and repair jewelry, so there's no out of pocket cost for me. If you'd like some more information on the course, it can be found here!
Next up...I decided to improve my photography skills. So I bought a book. This book to be exact:
This book is great because it isn't overwhelming you with terms and definition, instead it's way more straightforward. You wanna take a portrait outside? Turn off the flash, use a medium f-stop number and a low ISO. Wanna take a picture of your dog playing outside? Again, no flash, but this time use a fast shutter speed. It does also get into all the scientific mumbo-jumbo, but beyond the basics I just don't have the attention span to read about that, lol, so I really like this book.
Then I decided to start couponing - why the hell not right? I got a binder, inserts, a Sunday paper...I even clipped the coupons out of the Sunday paper! Now I just have to put my clipped coupons in my binder and actually start using them.
As long as I stick with this long enough to cover the cost of my binder/inserts I'll be happy. If I get really into it and end up on Extreme Couponing I expect you all to lock me in a padded cell, because those people are legit hoarders! But I doubt I'll get that into it, lol. It would be nice to save some dough on our grocery shopping bill though!
And finally I decided to start selling my hand-knit creations. I haven't gotten to the point of creating an Etsy shop or anything yet, instead I'm basically just selling stuff to other people on base. I already have 3 orders. I even made a Facebook page! If you want to go and "like" it, you are more then welcome to. And if you really wanted to order something from me, I wouldn't say no, but you'll just have to pay for the shipping and the Paypal fee. And you'll have to wait a while since I still need to finish my first 3 orders.
So yeah, if that isn't full blown mania, I don't know what is. But like I said, it isn't scary-I-think-I-can-fly mania, it's just I-think-I-can-do-everything-and-won't-stop-until-I-do mania. With my type of mania, I always end up making some extra cash which is totally not a bad thing with a little Seamonkey on the way! And this post turned out way longer than I intended it to be, so I'm gonna cut myself off now!
Until next time...

I'm officially the most vain person ever...
This morning I was having a conversation with Gabby that went a little something like this...
Me - Lordy Gabby, this acne is driving me crazy. If I could change anything about this pregnancy, I would get rid of my pregnancy-acne.
Gabby - Really Mom? You can't think of any other symptom you'd rather get rid of?
Me - Nope. My skin is driving me bonkers!
Gabby - Weren't you just in so much pain that you were in tears? Wouldn't you much rather get rid of your back pain?
Me - Hmmmm...you're right, but nope, I'd still rather get rid of the acne.
Okay, so obviously I wasn't actually having a conversation with Gabby, lol, but don't judge me! I live by myself (until The Sailor gets back from deployment) so instead of admitting that I totally talk to myself way too much, I just talk to Gabby! Plus, she's a great listener...
But seriously, I would rather have clear skin and still deal with my severe back pain. How horrible is that? I'm the most vain person ever!!! And after I had this revelation, I started to think about it and try to rationalize it and I decided it isn't completely due to the fact that I'm super obsessed with how I look. The fact of the matter is, I've been dealing with back problems for a while now. I'm used to being in pain (as sad as that is for a 23 year old to admit). I'm not used to being fat and having acne. I.feel.gross. It's that simple. And I can't prevent the baby belly from happening, because I'm growing a freaking baby! But before I was pregnant, this is what I would consider "breaking out:"
That's right - one pimple and my life was over. I would kill to only have one pimple now!
Did I mention this is actually my 26 week update? Because it is...haha. Apart from realizing I'm way too obsessed with how I look, this week I got the best deal on a bunch of baby stuff!
That is...the most adorable (and practically brand new) bassinet, a trash bag {stuffed full} of baby boys clothes and blankets, a baby bath tub, a "travel swing" (the kind that can fold down to next to nothing), one of those seats that lights up and vibrates, and a play mat. Guess how much I paid for all that. No, seriously guess...
$40!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah - all of that for only $40! And the best part is their baby boy was born in the beginning of May so the different sized clothes will be the right seasons for The Seamonkey! Well, as close as you could hope to get since I'm due in early April. I officially have way too much clothes for this little guy, lol.
And I guess that's really all that's new this week on the pregnancy front (apart from my growing belly). I officially ordered the rest of my cloth diaper stash this morning, so once all those get here I'll start a series on why I chose the brands I did and my initial reviews of the diapers. Plus I have a bunch of plans for the nursery that I'll be updating you all on soon enough (I'm actually covered in primer right now from starting the work on the dresser/changing table combo, lol)! And on top of that I actually have a lot of news to share with you all that isn't pregnancy related at all! So the next few weeks should actually be pretty fun blog-post wise!
Until next time...

Oh, Hello Nesting....
I am a cleaning machine. Period.
For real though, I have done so much today and it's just barely noon as I'm typing this now...
![]() |
| Source |
- I did my normal kitchen/living room tidying (the dishes, picked up dog toys, clorox wiped everything, etc.)
- Vacuumed the living room
- Did a load of laundry (washed, dried, folded, and put away)
- Washed my sheets (washed, dried, and re-made the bed)
- Cleaned my bedroom (general tidying, dusting, etc.)
- Scrubbed the hell out of the upstairs bathroom (sink, toilet, tub, floor and all!)
- Changed out the kitty litter (we have an automatic litter box but the insert needs to be thrown away and replaced about once a month)
- Vacuumed the "cat room" (it's just a large closet upstairs where the cat food and litter box live - I cannot express enough how amazing it is to have a completely separate room for the cat. The door stays open but there's a gate there to keep the dogs out)
- Vacuumed the upstairs hallway and our bedroom (the nursery has too much random shit strewn about and I never even open the door to the third bedroom which will eventually be an office so they didn't get vacuumed.)
- I even vacuumed the freaking stairs. Which sucked. Stairs shouldn't be carpeted. Period.
That, my friends, is a list of 10 freaking cleaning related things I did this morning. I am Wonderwoman. Well, I'm not Wonderwoman, I'm nesting-woman, and it damn near killed my vacuum, lol.
![]() |
| Personal Photo |
I actually had to give my vacuum a break halfway through the stairs because it was getting too hot and losing suction!
Since this crazy cleaning spree is completely out of character for me, I'm attributing it to "nesting instincts." Parenting weekly has a great article on nesting, but I think it can be summed up by the first paragraph of the article:
Around the fifth month of pregnancy, the "nesting" instinct can set in. This is an uncontrollable urge to clean one's house brought on by a desire to prepare a nest for the new baby, to tie up loose ends of old projects and to organize your world.
Honestly, I'm not gonna complain about it unless I start doing something crazy like feeling the need to scrub my floors with a toothbrush (which apparently some crazy preggers do). I've always wanted to be a tidy person, I just really hate cleaning.
By some miracle though, even after my cleaning spree, my (DIY) manicure that I just did yesterday held up completely. It's official, China Glaze is by far superior to OPI.
But now I'm gonna go relax, do some knitting, and probably fall asleep. I totally earned an afternoon nap!
Until next time...

Tell Me About Yo-self!
Elley, author of Up Above the World So High tagged me with the "Tell Me About Yourself Award!"
So...here's how it works:
1. Thank the person who awarded you. (Thanks Elley!!!)
2. List 7 things people may not know about you.
3. Pass it on to 15 other bloggers and don’t forget to notify them
For reals though, 15 other bloggers is A LITTLE obscene, so I'm going to pass the award on to three other bloggers (like Elley did, lol). But anyways, on to things you didn't know about me, which may be kinda tough to think of since I have a tendency to over-share on my blog, haha...
1) I went to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA and studied Information Systems Management. It's a great field to get into and I chose it because I knew I could make good money doing it. Now that my priorities have changed I think I may want to re-focus myself before I go back to work after having kids and staying home with them for a few years.
2) I tap danced for a decade and a half - yup, 15 whole years. I started when I was 3 and continued until I graduated high school. I still regularly tap around especially when I'm cooking and have music playing or in department stores (they tend to play music that's easy to tap to, haha).

3) I had an umbilical hernia when I was little that I had surgically repaired when I was 4. It's a hernia that gives you an extreme outtie belly button if it doesn't fix itself while you're still an infant. Because my belly button is man-made not home grown (lol) it is REALLY deep, and I'm terrified what kind of Frankenstein-esque scene it'll be if it pops out during my pregnancy.
4) Along that same note, I don't have a gallbladder. I started having gallstone attacks when I was 17, but doctors had no idea what was going on since it is so weird for a healthy, active, 17 year old to have gallstones. When I was 20 I ended up in the ER because the attack was so back and they new what it was right away. When it was removed, they re-opened the incision in my belly button (I had laproscopic surgery) and so I can only imagine what the scar in there looks like - just another reason that I don't want my belly button to pop out!
5) I went to the same summer camp for 7 years and worked there for 2. It's in New Hampshire and all my favorite memories growing up are there. I hope to send my own kids there some day (Pleasant Valley for girls or North Woods for boys).

6) My first boyfriend ever was in the fourth grade. We dated for almost a year. He got me a necklace from Claire's for Christmas and chocolates for Valentine's Day. Our first date was to go see Mulan (yes, the Disney cartoon), hahahahaha.
7) I drive a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix. It has like 115,000 miles on it and is not aesthetically in perfect condition, but I love it. I've considered getting a new car, but every time I test drive one I don't like it. I think I'll be really upset when it gets to the point where I have to get a new car. I would like to get it professionally cleaned on the inside though, especially before the baby arrives!
Phew, I came up with 7 things! Sorry if they're totally lame; I did what I could. Now, I tag:
- Miss Tattoo @ Tattoos and Lace
- Diana @ Garden Beneath the Sky

Flying While Pregnant
First off, sorry I've been totally MIA since leaving for my trip. I had a great time at home (more on that later) and then the worst travel experience EVER on the way back to California that ended in me missing my second flight, being stranded in Arizona, feeling like crap, and finally getting home a day late. But whatevs, I'm home now (praise Buddha) and figured I'd do a post on my experience and my recommendations for flying while pregnant!
I flew from Fresno, California to Boston, Massachusetts. Since Fresno is a tiny airport I had a transfer in Phoenix, Arizona. My first flight was just over one hour, the second just over five (the way back was significantly longer since it was going against the jet stream) and I left at like 9:30 am (local time) and arrived at about 8 pm (local time). Apart from some severe turbulence towards the end of my second flight the whole experience was pretty uneventful.
Before Leaving
First of all, when you're booking your flights sit in an aisle seat. As much as it sucks to be hit with the beverage cart every time they pass, let's face it, we pregnant ladies pee a lot, and sitting in the aisle makes it considerably more comfortable to get up and go to the restroom. You should also get up regularly to stretch your legs to prevent getting blood clots, which is another reason to sit in the aisle.
If you have to change planes make sure you leave enough time between them. Normally I have no problem sprinting from one end of an airport to the other carry-on luggage in tow, but at 23 weeks pregnant I'm not quite as quick as I'm used to. And my back hurts enough just walking, never mind running with the added weight of luggage.
And don't forget to talk to your doctor/midwife. My midwife didn't bring up wearing compression stockings or anything, but that may have been related to how far along I am and the fact that I actually haven't swollen up at all (my rings have actually gotten loose on me since getting pregnant), but your doctor may feel differently.
These next two are just good to do in general before flying, but to me were especially important since I'm carrying precious cargo, lol.
The few days before you fly, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Airplanes are dry and disease ridden places. Making sure that you're properly hydrated before flying will make the experience more pleasant. And, if you are properly hydrated you won't feel the need to drink as much while in the air thus minimizing trips to the gross-o airplane bathrooms.
For me, this last one was a huge one. You see, when I was in middle school I flew down to Florida with an ear infection. Then got water in my ear while visiting. When I flew home, my ears started bleeding and I have been fighting ear issues ever since. Since that experience, I've had a strict regiment of borderline over-dosing on decongestant allergy meds for the week leading up to my flight as well as using Affrin nasal spray for at least three days leading up to the flight. Making sure that I don't have anything blocking my sinuses while I fly has minimized the discomfort and lasting negative effects that I've always associated with extreme pressure changes.
Well, I couldn't do that this time. I don't want to take any medications during my pregnancy, even if they are considered "safe" for pregnant women. I don't think there's anything wrong with women who do choose to take medication while pregnant, it just isn't something I want to do. So how did I prepare my sinus cavities for the flight? Sinus irrigation. Yup, I neti-ed it up...
In case you were unaware, a neti pot is used to clear the sinus cavity of allergens as well as irrigate your sinuses. This is accomplished by using a saline solution in the little "pot," then you lean over a sink and pour the warm liquid in one nostril. From there, gravity takes control and the liquid goes through the sinus cavity and out the other nostril.
It's a strange sensation to say the least, but after you get over that, it is freaking amazing. I didn't have any issues with my sinuses/ears during my flights! Although it probably isn't completely due to the neti (maybe my ears are actually just getting better!) I definitely think it helped! I "cleansed" twice a day (once in the morning and once in the evening) for the week leading up to my trip, and the entire time I was gone.
Day of flight/while flying
Dress in layers. Seriously, my temperature changes are worse than my mood swings, lol! And you really never know if it'll be blazing hot or freezing cold on a plane. Also, I don't like to use the little air vent to cool you off since in my mind its just spraying you with germs (seriously though - the air on planes is disgusting), and would much prefer to sit there in a tank top. It also doesn't hurt to dress in form fitting clothes (but still comfortable) to show off your bump. Let's face it, people in general are much nicer to pregnant ladies than they are anyone else!
Don't forget to bring snacks. Beyond the fact that its really rare for an airline to actually give you any food on a flight, if you're anything like me you can go from fine to starving in three seconds flat. And no one likes a starving pregnant lady!
Once you get to security, ask questions about the scanners they're using. At the Fresno airport, they use scanners that actually use sound waves; there is no radiation emitted from them. In Boston, however, they use a different type of scanner that does expose you to small amounts of radiation. Is it harmful to your baby? The authorities say it isn't. But radiation is something that builds up in your system over time, and you'll be exposed to some of it during your flight no matter what you do. So I'm, personally, not comfortable exposing my little Sea Monkey to any more radiation than necessary, and when going through security in Boston I asked for a pat down rather than a scan. They had no problem with it!
Once you get through security, go buy the biggest water you can get your hands on. You really don't know how long it'll take for the "beverage services" to start while you're in the air, plus you don't want to be harassing the flight attendants the entire flight. Having a huge jug of water at your disposal is a must.
And I might seem kinda paranoid, but I promise I'm not germaphobic. Airplanes and airports are just disgusting. Period. Wash your hands every chance you get. There are just so many people bringing diseases from all around the world. Not to mention the fact that the air while in flight is just recycled over and over again, meaning you're just getting washed over again and again by germs. It's disgusting.
Finally, once you get to your final destination (wash your hands again, hahaha) enjoy yourself! These past few days I've been a little sore which I'm attributing to being crammed in a small seat for so long so I've made it a point to stretch as much as possible, but apart from that I feel fine!
If you have any advice to add, be sure to leave a comment, and hopefully this long ass post can help someone else prep for a flight during their pregnancy!
Until next time...

Guess where I am?

I'll be staying with my Dad for the next 6 days. I have never slept in my father's house for more than 2 days, and the last time I did that was in middle school. Not gonna lie, I'm a little nervous. I love my Dad, it's his wife who I'm not the biggest fan of. If she gets on my nerves my plan is to basically tell her to shut up and blame my short tempered-ness on being pregnant, hahaha.
Saturday my Dad's side of the family is getting together. My grandfather is actually making a pretty big deal about it, which is super sweet. And he isn't counting this as their Christmas get together, this is just for me. I feel special!
Then Sunday my Mom is having her side of the family over her house. In case you forgot, my Mom and I didn't leave on the best terms last month. In fact, we haven't really been speaking. She did send me a text message on black Friday that said, "I hope you had a good day yesterday" and sent me another text message the other day that said, "I expect you're still coming on the 11th, everyone is expecting you." I'm slightly terrified. But at the same time, if I time it right and get there after everyone else and leave before everyone else I know it'll be fine. She won't make a scene in front of her Dad and sisters.
So, overall, I'm excited to see everyone but nervous at the same time. Hopefully everything will go smoothly this time! I'm not gonna lie though, I hate leaving the dogs. This morning I was trying to explain to them how long I would be gone. Lola wasn't phased. Gabby was going nuts since she knows I'm leaving when I get out my suitcase. It isn't like I worry about them being okay, Navy Wife Kim will be watching them, I just don't like leaving them. At lease I won't go through total doggy withdrawals though since my Dad has a rottweiler to keep me company!
Until next time...

Eff This, He Can Sleep on the Floor
Subtitle: Trials and Tribulations While Sanding, Priming, Painting, and Assembling the Crib I Bought Used Off Craigslist
Good golly gosh - what a miserable experience that was! Like seriously, I almost threw in the towel at least 10 times, but in the end, it looks freaking awesome, so I'm glad I stuck it out.
So, you may remember from way back when in week 13 I found a sweet deal on a crib and dresser/changing table combo on Craigslist for $100! Sweet, right? Well, I thought so back then...
There wasn't anything wrong with the crib but me being me, I wanted to paint it. I never really thought about how much work that really was, I was just thinking about a pretty yellow crib! Plus, it was disassembled so in my head the whole project shouldn't be that bad. Boy was I wrong.
Sanding it down was super easy, really didn't take that long. Awesome! The project was going smoothly just like I assumed it would.
Next up was priming it. Shouldn't be that hard. I set up with my primer and a mini foam roller when the Apocalypse began. They came out of nowhere and were trying to kill me. The flies.
I don't know how widespread the problem is, but at least here on Base there are flies everywhere. And these suckers are aggressive. I tried to work through the attacks but damn near had a panic attack from all the buzzing. By the time I finally gave up (and decided to find something to combat the flies before continuing the project) I looked like a psych ward escapee covered in primer...
So I finally got some of those strips of like tape that you hang up and a spray that supposedly repels flies and I got back to the project.
In all, I did two coats of primer and two coats paint. But, this was done over eight sittings since I could only do one side at a time. I used regular old primer and Martha Stewart paint in the "Custard" color.
Do you know what a pain in the ass it is to paint a flipping crib??? All the tiny little spaces that are near impossible to get to. It was, without a doubt, the most monotonous and boring project I have ever completed. After I had completed the first coat of actual paint, I tried to convince myself it looked fine and I could stop there, haha. Luckily the smarter half of my brain won that battle and I finished the last coat of paint. I can't even explain how excited I was when I finally was done painting and brought all the pieces up to the nursery to assemble it.
Since I had bought it used I didn't have assembly instructions, but how hard could it be, right? So I laid the pieces out how they would have to be put together and got ready to start assembling.
There were two different size bolts in the baggy with the hardware that the seller had given me.
And, funny thing about all of those bolts - none of them fit. Yup, they had given me the wrong freaking hardware. Are you freaking kidding me??? I should have given up back when the flies tried to kill me! I didn't want to have the day be a complete waist, so I propped up the pieces how they would eventually be assembled.
The crib is a Simplicity brand crib. Before I painted the whole thing I did research on the model and there were no recalls, but the company had gone under recently. That means I can't contact them to get replacement hardware. If I hadn't put my blood, sweat, tears, and sanity into painting the damn thing I probably would have thrown in the towel. But, I had way too much invested in it to just give up, so I went out and got an electric drill and some wood screws for like 20 bucks.
I didn't, however, invest in any actual drill bits. The girl half of my brain figured I could just use the drill to put the screws straight into the crib. The girl half of my brain was wrong!!! The first screw I tried got maybe a quarter of the way in and broke. Instead of accepting that I needed drill bits I tried again - the second screw got about as far in and then got completely stripped. Awesome!
So I temporarily threw in the towel once again. The Sailor probably has drill bits somewhere in the garage, but I don't have the patients to go digging through his tool box. Hell, I'm not even sure I have the key to his tool box. So, the next time I was out, I invested in some drill bits to add to my tool box.
Let me tell you - it is way easier to put screws in a piece of wood when you've drilled a hole first!
So, with Gabby's help (she didn't really help - I kept asking her to hand me screws and she looked at me like I'm nuts, lol) I put 3 screws in for every 1 that would have been there if I had the right hardware.
All that was left was the "sleigh" details on the front and back and the part that the mattress will eventually lay on. Adding the sleigh details was easy enough; by that point I had gotten pretty good with my drill. The mattress part is currently not actually secured (I just used some wood screws in the existing holes because I wanted to see the "complete" crib) but I have over 4 months to figure out what size bolt I need to actually attach it.
Isn't it pretty? The biggest pain in my ass ever - but it looks pretty damn good, doesn't it?
And, don't worry about whether or not it's safe. That thing is fucking secure. Nothing is going to bring it down. Seriously. We will probably never be able to disassemble it again!
Now, all that's left for me to do is a few touch ups (my frustrations while trying to assemble it may have lead to a few dings in my oh so lovely paint job) and I want to figure out a way to cover up the screws. Any ideas? And if you think my lovely crib is impressive, just wait until you see what I have planned for the dresser/changing table combo! It is gonna be amazing (and luckily it's already completely put together so I won't have to deal with that, lol)!
Until next time...
